Life Story

Alan Lawrence Hartman

Alan was born near St. Benedict, Minnesota on June 2, 1935. He was the son of Clara Wick and Edward Hartman. When he was only two, his dad passed away. His mom remarried a gentleman named Math Schommer and they raised the family in St. Benedict. As a child, Alan knew a family with a young daughter named Alda. When she was five years old, they moved to the city, but they continued to visit family members back home. Eventually, Alan would marry Alda Miller and move to the city to be with her. Following graduation, Alan enlisted in the United States Army and admirably served his country. After being honorably discharged, he married Alda on July 1, 1961on St. Paul’s Eastside at Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. They raised three of their children on the Eastside and continued to be involved with Sacred Heart Parish and School. They were dedicated parishioners for almost 60 years and could be found volunteering with the fall festival and other events at church. Alan had a long career in construction with Kraus-Anderson Company. Anyone that worked with him likely did not know his real name because he was known as “Smiley” at work. When he was not working or spending time with his family, Alan loved to go to the casino, go polka dancing, play cribbage, or watch the Twins and Vikings play on television. He enjoyed polka on tv as well as westerns and the Price is Right. Alan will be remembered for his social personality and his witty sense of humor.

Alan is preceded in death by his father, Edward Hartman; his mother, Clara (Math) Schommer; his wife, Alda Hartman; his infant son, Math Hartman; and several siblings. He is survived by his three children, Cheryl Ryder of Maplewood, Gary Hartman of Hastings, and Vicki Hartman of St. Paul; his three grandchildren, Nicole (Josh) Wojcik of Lindstrom, Ashley Ryder (Brandon) of Wyoming, and Brayden Hartman of Hastings; his four great-grandchildren, Olivia, MacKenzie, Katelyn, and Addison Wojcik; his twin sister, Alice Schaunas; and many other family and friends.
