Dave was just amazing. We got to know each other through church. He was a youth leader for my son and then I spent time with him teaching him more about our faith with the missionaries. He was generous and gracious. He loved to take us to the Vietnamese restaurant near his home for lunch. He was open and caring and had the best attitude. I’ll never forget his face or words being with him during an important religious event in our temple. He will be SORELY missed, but I am so grateful he is pain free and at peace. We LOVE you Dave, forever!

I worked with Dave for approximately 30 years. We hit it off immediately from the first day we met on the job. We remained close friends right up to the end seeing him at his house just a few weeks ago. I have always known Dave to be a great man who I have always respected. My wife Julie and I send our deepest sympathy to the entire family on such a great loss.

I love Dave like a brother. It was always wonderful to spend time at his place just talking and visiting about whatever was going on in our lives at the time. I freely told me that he loved me and that expression of love meant so much to me. I once mentioned to him that I had grown up going to Baltimore Orioles baseball games and the next time I saw him he gave me a binder full of Orioles baseball cards. He was always looking for opportunities to give of his time, energy and effort to those around him. He will be a forever example to me of someone who humbly tries to treat others as Christ would want them to be treated. I love you Dave. See you soon.

I have such wonderful memories of my time with your family when I was growing up. All the time my Mom and I spent at your house on 4th street, us younger kids playing while Mom was drinking coffee at the kitchen counter with your Mom. Over the years our families have shared a lot together. Your family means so much to me. My thoughts are with all of you during this very difficult time.

Dave was one of the most warm, kind and generous humans I have known. He always made me smile. He is deeply loved by my family and will be greatly missed. Until we meet again my friend.

We love you Thomas/Black family! The few times I got to spend with Dave he was always smiling, easy going and making us laugh. He was definitely a “cool dad”! I will always be thankful for the daughter he raised, my best friend and an amazing wife and mom, Jaclyn. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on through his loving family!

Dave had a special gift of making whomever he spoke with feel like they were the most important person in the world. He was always so quick with a smile and to ask how my family was doing. And, of course, he knew my kids by name because that's the kind of thoughtful person Dave was. I remember one day having a long talk with Dave about apples--and Dave loved apples. We were relatively new to Minnesota, and he told me his favorite flavors and varieties, the best places to pick them, how to make homemade applesauce, etc. A few days later, when I learned his cancer had taken a turn for the worst, I stopped by Dave's house to check up on him. As soon as he saw me standing on his porch, the first words out of his mouth were "I've got a bag of apples for you!" Despite his condition and the reason for my visit, and despite the pain he was clearly in, Dave was thinking about others and finding ways to serve them. To this day, I can't see a Haralson apple without thinking of Dave Black.
To Dave's family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for allowing Dave to be a part of our lives. We are infinitely richer and better people for having known him.

Dave was a brother in arms. Not of a specific war but in the general battle of life. As many others have mentioned he was so easy to be with, whether you were playing cribbage or sharing lunch, and was a generous friend. But I know that he had seen trouble in his life and was empathetic to others who were suffering as well. His big heart had a lot of love in it and he went out of his way to make sure he shared that love with so many different people in his life. I am truly grateful to have been one of those recipients and I look forward to the day when I can give him a big hug, play another round of cribbage, and catch up on his latest adventures.

How grateful I am to have known Dave Black. We have loved him from the very moment we met him 8 years ago. He just was so fun to be around and so uplifting. He made every person he met feel loved and special. Once he took our whole family out to his favorite restaurant--it was so sweet. Dave I will miss your voice, your smile, your apple crisp (it was the very best!), your sweet heart, and just being with you. Our girls will miss you too you have been one of our Minnesota grandparents. I like picturing you watching over all your loved ones and meeting new people to help and love! Your sweet family is in our prayers at this time.
Love, Summer Jones
