Hugh was born at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota on January 3, 1942. He was one of 5 children to Ann (nee Edmondson) and Edward Hugh Markley. After grade school, he went on to attend Cretin High School and was in the class of 1960. After high school, Hugh went to St. Thomas College (now St. Thomas University) and graduated with the class of 1964. He had a passion for law and graduated from William Mitchell School of Law in 1968. He went on to practice law for 45 years, retiring in December of 2012. He and Mary were married at Sacred Heart Parish in September of 1969 at Sacred Heart Church and had three children together. Hugh's hobbies were reading, music, golfing, curling, and traveling. He also was active in many organizations. He made many friends during his life and was a loving husband and dad. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Hugh passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 23, 2018. He was only 76 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Ann Markley; his brother, Thomas Markley; and his brother-in-law, Mark Steele. He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Mary Margaret Markley; his son, Patrick (Kelly) Markley of Ann Arbor, MI; his daughters, Molly (Mark) Duevel of Champlin, MN and Katie (Jamie) Capeless of Bonn, Germany; his grandchildren, Michael Markley, Sonny Duevel, Vivi Capeless, and Aoife Capeless; his siblings, Patty Steele, Eddie (Karen) Markley, and Terry (Shelley) Markley; and other family and friends.

There will be a visitation for Hugh from 9AM until 10AM on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 51 7th St. W., St. Paul with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM. There will be a formal procession to Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights for prayers and Hugh’s inurnment.

Hugh’s family would like to thank his personal caretaker, Donna, for the excellent care and compassion she provided for him over the last few months. They would also like to thank HealthEast Hospice for their care and guidance.
