Obituary for Vern Roy Manty

Vern Manty was born August 12, 1937 to Julia and John Manty in the small farming town of Kettle River, MN. Out of the 11 children born to Julia and John, he was baby # 6. His siblings included Leo, Norman, Janet, Donna, Jean, Pauline, Rueben, Bruce, Karen and Gary. His beloved father died unexpectantly of a heart attack at the young age of 54 when Vern was only 14, leaving Julia and the kids to manage the farm alone. His mother later married Hugo Metso and added one more brother, Brian, to the family.

Vern loved all sports growing up as a kid and was one of Moose Lake High School baseball team’s leading hitters in 1957. He was very well liked by his peers and in 1956 both him and his sister Pauline were nominated as Homecoming King and Queen together.

Vern proudly served in the Army from 1956-1958 as a Medical Specialist. Not long after he got out, he met Marlene Meyer, a beautiful red headed girl from the cities and fell in love. They married on July 21, 1962 and happily spent the next 56 years together. Vern was very talented when it came to carpentry and built his first house in 1964 in beautiful White Bear Lake. By 1965 he had 3 amazing children - Jeff, Kara, and Kim and in 1969 they adopted Jay, an extraordinary son from Korea to add to their blessings. Vern bought land across the pond for his growing family and built his 2nd house, often having his 2 young boys, ages 7 and 8 help him. They moved in the fall of 1969 and spent the next 49 years there before the good Lord called him to heaven. He was a kind, gentle, and patient man and was always willing to give of himself whenever it was needed. He used his skills as a carpenter to supplement his income and build amazing things for others. He never thought he was smart but boy if you put a hammer and a tape measure in his hands, and he could build anything! To us kids he was smarter than any man we knew! He built his kids decks, kitchen cabinets, armoires, tables and so much more! He never hesitated to share his time, his love and his talents. Never! Jesus’s earthly father, Joseph, was also a carpenter and how honored and proud us kids are to have our Dad; our wonderful Father share the same craft as someone so special.

Vern worked at Control Data in the maintenance department for many years. He retired from there, where God then led him to work full time at Merrick, Inc. working with adults with disabilities. He had such a compassionate heart and gentle spirit and it was the perfect place for him to shine. The clients LOVED him and often asked for Vern when he wasn’t there. The staff also adored him and had so much respect and love for him and hated to see him go. Vern gave 100% with whatever he did and never complained about any task or chore. He truly was a saint in the eyes of those around him and love by so many. He finally was able to fully retire in December of 2016 at the age of 79.

Above all else, Vern loved our Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart and soul. He accepted Jesus Christ into his heart in 1970 and never left his side ever since. He was a strong man of faith who lived by the Word of God and instilled those values to his children. Deuteronomy 6:6-8 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Impress them upon your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” Vern lived this verse to its fullest and it was his greatest gift that he could give his children and those that he loved! He was a proud and humble man who showed others the love of Jesus by living like Jesus did. He loved like Jesus loved. He prayed relentlessly for others and we have comfort in knowing that his eyes have seen the face of Jesus the day he was called to heaven. Jesus said in Luke 23:43 “…Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise”

Vern leaves behind his beloved wife who will miss him greatly, along with his 2 precious Shih Tzu puppies who are already mourning their daddy. He adored his puppies as much as they adored him! He also leaves behind his 4 children – Jay, Jeff, Kara and Kim, who were his heart and soul and was such an amazing father too. His 9 grandchildren – Mandy, Joshua, Tricia, Karena, Dylan, Casey, Chad, Taryn and Christian will surely miss their funny Grandpa. His great children – Ava, Lily, Willow, Ariana, Samson, Emil, August and Calvin did not get nearly enough time to spend with this amazing man they got to call Great Grandpa. He will be missed by many others and we are comforted to know that he is in a much better place! Until we meet again, We love you!!!!
